He was a contractor, contract meant to be ended or renewed depending on circumstances.
In my workplaces we had many contractors, most of them are not renewed, their jobs were meant to be short term but made an impact to the company. And obviously, there were all much more expensive than full time staff.
I don't work in 3d printing company, so this is just talking general terms.
