And yet BOSS is the most shorted ASX stock today. It is not making sense and something is very seriously wrong. I asked GROK about the short data and the last paragraph caught my eye which might explain such a discrepancy on a massive scale??? Comments @DeepThinker?
GROK:Based on the most recent data available, as of April 7, 2025, Boss Energy Ltd (ASX: BOE) is the most shorted stock on the ASX, with a short interest of 24.8%. This uranium producer has seen a significant increase in short interest, reflecting heavy betting against the uranium market by short sellers. The data comes from reports aggregated by ASIC, though it’s worth noting that this information is reported on a T+4 basis, meaning it reflects positions as of a few days prior to the publication date. The high short interest in Boss Energy aligns with broader market sentiment, as uranium stocks have faced increasing pressure. Posts on X around this time also highlight that other uranium miners like Paladin Energy, Deep Yellow, and Lotus Resources are among the top shorted stocks, with short interest levels at 15.7%, 13.1%, and 10.92% respectively as of April 10, 2025. This suggests a sector-wide bearish outlook, possibly driven by uranium prices dropping to around US$64/lb, the lowest in 18 months, amid a broader risk-off move in the energy sector and geopolitical shifts like the Trump administration’s plans to secure economic ties with Russia.
However, it’s important to approach this data with some skepticism. ASIC’s short position reports rely on the accuracy of individual short sellers’ submissions, and there’s no guarantee that all short sellers, especially those overseas, are fully compliant. Additionally, short interest can shift rapidly—stocks like Paladin Energy have seen some covering of short positions recently, possibly due to operational challenges rather than a bullish shift. So while Boss Energy currently holds the top spot, the landscape can change quickly, and short interest alone doesn’t necessarily predict a stock’s future performance. It’s a reflection of market sentiment, but sentiment can be wrong, as short sellers have been burned before when stocks rally unexpectedly.
