Those shorts could be part of the funds accumulation strategy prior to the ASX 200 inclusion.
A large proportion of reported 'shorts' are between-account transfers associated with fund's bot activities.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the reported 'shorts' to increase as a result of the increase in overall volume and bot activity since inclusion in the ASX 200.
Alternatively, if you think the uptick was driven by short-selling based on inside information, you'd expect those positions to close (or begin to be closed) as the event in question has passed (i.e. the SE3 results).
