"Given that the Greens will have to compromise on the starting carbon price, it seems to make logical negotiation sense that the price reduction could be offset by more government support for renewable energy. In fact even here on HC, those who are totally against the carbon price often seem to support more government support for renewable energy. "

Yes it makes political sense (as there appears to be no losers just lots of free money handed out), but not economic sense (because in reality there are losers who don't get the subsidies, and hence suffer because their solution is rendered less competitive by government favouritism, rather than economic merit). It sounds like the losers will be energy efficiency technologies, the likes of CFU, EDE, GER, WAS and you could include clean-er alternatives such as gas generation, EVs etc. But anyway that's a philosophical point. Its up to the politicians in their infinite wisdom to work out the best way forward and us humble investors to merely stick to the path they carve out for us. It sounds like it will be an improvement economically from residential PV subsidies in any case.
