(- More clear proof of the immense value in gaining technical skills if one can {and surely even I could improve mine if only I would apply myself}).
And yes to all those things you say about how difficult this sector is.
I remember I was outraged when years ago I read a reputable analyst was longer following a civil and mining sector company I hold shares in because - he wrote - it was a “lousy” investment.
I was outraged …. But now I agree.
Even more vividly the tender process was described as putting companies into the position of being “like starving rats in an empty barrel”.

That story related to WA but there are plenty of others out there saying the Eastern States are even worse.
