I don't think it's considered any threat to big fuel. Brightmark plastic to fuel plant currently being built in Indiana, has an agreement with BP to purchase all fuel produced, they like the improved environmental image it will give BP so I don't think anyone is particularly against the technology turning plastic waste to fuel or that it even competes, it's just too small.
“This plant and our arrangement is just recognition that this is what the world is demanding of energy providers now,” said Amy McKerns, director of business of development for BP’s Integrated Supply & Trading group. “We need to provide more fuel to meet increasing demand, but we need to do so in an environmentally conscious way.”
