The rush to commercialise assets that are being researched in Universities often kills off a lot of potential success.
One thing we can give the US some credit for is that there are a lot of benevolent investors who are willing to pour millions into science related ideas as donations. Maybe that is just because they have 330mil people but there does not seem to be a similar attitude in Australia.
Those donations often get directed a universities and hospitals.
