In summary it appears that patents, even when granted, come with no guarantees of protection of IP and the scope of protection provided in one jurisdiction may differ from another.
So obtaining the grant of patents, while desirable, are not everything it seems.
The content at 7.0 of the report 'Hazer Trade Secrets and Know-How' states, inter alia, that:
"That is, in our opinion, Hazer has a degree of know-how and trade secrets that extend beyond the formalised protection described above".
So, arguably, protecting your IP through confidentiality agreements with partners, third parties etc... is more important than the grant or not of a patent in any given jurisdiction.
