Trip time.

Running the pipe out and back in is called a trip. Reasons for a trip? Changing any part of the bottom hole assembly - usually the bit gets worn or the bottom type changes and needs replacement as its cutting ability is reduced.

The actual rate they can pull the pipe up in a straight run of 90 feet (which is how long three joints of pipe that are usually stacked when making a trip) is limited not so much by the power of the drawworks motor and sheaving arrangement, but more practically by a problem called swabbing where the pipe has a ball of mud and cuttings often around the bit that draws a suction on the bottom of the well, possibly so strong that it causes the sidewall to cave in or worse, the pressure of the mud column that holds well pressure back is lessened and allows a kick - a gas bubble that causes a blow out.

Other issues that can slow the trip - mechanical problems, stuck pipe for a variety of reasons, trouble with gas kicks, trouble with loss circulation, etc.

And of course a 15,000 foot trip requires stopping every 90 feet - one stand or three joints of pipe) to unscrew it and stack it on the side in many pieces. And on the return trip to screw it all back together.

The cost of a trip is basically the day rate for rig time which can run up to a million dollars per day for an offshore drillship.

Because it is expensive and it is non-productive time "not making hole" you want to postpone it as long as possible but you have to weigh it against continuing to run on a worn bit and make less rate of penetration or failing to change to the right kind of bit when you change from drilling sand to bedrock. The worst thing is to run a bit past its life and have the cone break off and lie in the bottom of the hole and be stuck trying to drill through it then having to pull the string and go fishing.

Time for a trip? Thalbert mentioned 24 hours and up and that's probably a good number.

And to state the obvious tripping up-and-down a fractured and fragile well bore there’s every chance that the well , subject to kicks and highly pressurised zones and gas pockets cave-ins would be normal. Tripping out especially would be at the slower end of the scale and real risk of junk piling up above the bit. No news is good news. My feelings are the alameda casing is not yet done but must almost be. Two weeks since TD
