There's some reputable shorting firms around. If they find something seriously wrong with the company that is being hidden from the market then I think they deserve the spoils of war to expose it and sell it down. In this case though, it was like when a kid puts on mommy's clothes and pretends to be a grown up... a temporary outage from one of the most transparent companies on the ASX, just lazy... they don't want to do the work to find a real target so they invent one.
