Yep, Shapiro is decent though he cheer leaded the Afterpay hate train along with Joe Aston - look how that turned out
the crux of the entire original article is false. Cettire confirmed today in the call they always pay customs in Australia as required, they have a direct debit account setup with them. The goods cannot clear customs if duty is not paid.
if you go and recreate the basket right now, you can see you get charged duty. This is a calculation by cettire based on previous orders and where you are located - sometimes it is too high or too low, this is a risk cettire takes on on behalf of their retailers - a part of the service they offer to earn their fee on the sale. They confirmed today that they had considerable costs on this line in the past. Today they also confirmed it was a negligible net amount either positive or negative for their position on the fees they charge minus the actual customs fees.
further, the most pertinent point in my view, is that if you were hypothetically trying to avoid paying customs by splitting orders into different packages, you’d want to make sure your freight costs were less than the duty being avoided. They confirmed today freight is their largest cost by far and it does not make them more profit to split orders - they end up paying more in shipping.
so essentially the afr hissy fitted that an up and coming company didn’t want to engage with their journalists and decided they’d write a hit piece and then have chanticleer come in and try and act all wise by saying ‘you should have spoken to us’
who the hell expected the afr to try stand over tactics to try and get ceos to accept interviews by their staff? Very poor behaviour, fairfax
