I'd speculate that Tom resigned abruptly because he became connected somehow with thirty path investors (most likely Private Equity) looking to take the business private and sort the mess out - with the assistance of Tom along the way.
I don't see Tom walking away from this - in fact the opposite - I'd see it as Tom seeing it as a great opportunity to take the business back under his control, via PE, get it sorted out, re-list it and make a further fortune in the process.
