About 5 years ago I decided to go big on the building supplies sector. I thought that my decision was a no-brainer at the time because Aussies love building houses and import competition is limited for bulky goods like building materials.
So I bought ABC, Boral, CSR. I sold Boral for a nice profit during that takeover and now I am forced to sell both ABC & CSR due to takeovers. Can't complain because I'm locking in big gains on both. Still, it's a bit sad that we are losing the opportunities to invest in this sector. I suppose this is one reason why CBA, BHP & RIO are going gangbusters. The fund managers have nowhere else to go. IMO CSR is much more worthy of protection from foreign takeover than a lame duck like Qantas which is protected by legislation.
