Appears reasonable. This is still a significant amount of money that would send most companies around the world broke. Appears the overall liability to BHP LTD (ie us) is roughly what the provision is already at, but would be payable over a decade or more. Ie just over $US7.2bn payable vs provision at $6.5bn USD.
Let’s hope this can be put to rest sooner or later. Unfortunately these things can and do happen, BHP and Vale (noting vale was the operator not BHP) have been decent corporate citizens in response to a tragic event.
