To save embarrassment he would have withdrawn the resolution just before the meeting when it was obvious from the figures the Company were in receipt of that the particular resolution would not be passed.
It is done regularly by Coys when they know that a particular resolution has no chance of passing even before the voting is conducted at a meeting.
