I can tell you exactly why they use cheques: so they can keep our money (and earn interest on it) for as long as possible
I had one go missing years ago. $10k. I forgot about it and only discovered the discrepancy four years later. The company / registry never bothered to chase me or reissue the cheque over that entire period.
