I hadn't thought of this, but it seems one of the most likely explanation. Two other possibilities are:
1. unexpected health problems
2. fundamental disagreement with the chairman that wasn't apparent in his more passive board role (vs leading director).
As others have mentioned, Gary just got re-elected to the board, so not an exit that he would have foreseen a month or two ago.
