Pumped Hydro is obviously a great option with long asset life and has a long operational history already.
Gravity, thermal or compressed air storage is also avenues that they should review and explore.
Energy Vault has a gravity BESS system - received a 2Gw mandate from China Tianying https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20220915005772/en/ and another 2.5Gw LoI announced today... they are doing a minesite battery with BHP & Korea Zinc also (in QLD)
