"How many ton of 6 percent spod does it take to manufacture 1 tonne of hydroxide??"
What fooled me the last time this question was asked is whether the question is really about anhydrous lithium hydroxide or lithium hydroxide monohydrate. Anhydrous LiOH would be even nastier than the LiOH.H2O, so I assume it is the latter that is manufactured and transported..
If it is LiOH.H2O , then the calculation for 100% conversion goes like this.
6.1 tonnes of 6% Li2O ore contains 1000 x 0.06 x 0.45 = 164.7 kg of Li.
The Li content of LiOH.H2O is 16.54%
So, 164.7 kg of lithium makes 164.7 / 0.1654 = 1000 kg = one tonne LiOH.H2O
However, the recovery is not 100% efficient.
Allowing for the reporter's error, Chris Ellison was recently quoted as saying that it takes 7 tonnes of 6% spod to make 1 tonne of lithium hydroxide.
I assume he should know.
Why do you ask?
Cheers
