For BHP to have looked at the Anglo takeover seriously they must see something over the horizon other than JUST the price of copper. It's more likely a global agenda to pursue the green agenda with alternative energy. It wouldn't make sense to take out Anglo for just the 'copper price', but it would make sense if the volumes of copper expanded due to the green agenda.
BHP would have more insight and assurances from vested interests i.e. Blackrock, Vanguard and State Street as to where they will be allocating their funds in the future. And there is also the push for the big to just get bigger so fewer companies own all the assets rather than just disperate companies owning small market share of commodities it will be the bigger ones that have pricing control.
It's really Anglo that is under pressure now, if BHP walk away they (Anglo) will have stranded assets that no-one wants to own or be able to readily dispose of.
I'm still 50/50 on this one as I believe BHP has more insight than me why it is a worthy consideration even though their reputation says otherwise.
