It's almost identical on Sunday 8 August with REX having just one flight departing from SYD - to Wagga Wagga - while from Tullamarine in Melbourne it's the same as Saturday - one to King Island, and another to Mildura.

So no REX flights from SYD to Albury, Armidale (locked down), Ballina (for what is now almost 'free' of tourists normally teeming Byron Bay), Bathurst, isolated Broken Hill, Coffs Harbour, Cooma (for the snow at Thredbo/Perisher/Jindabyne), Dubbo, Grafton, Griffith, Lismore (NSW), Merimbula/Moruya, Narrandera, Orange, Parkes, Port Macquarie, and Tamworth in NSW, plus reduced frequency on Melbourne - Mildura and no flights Melbourne - Albury, Burnie, Merimbula or Wagga Wagga.

In contrast, government-owned NSW TrainLink continues to operate its XPLorer and XPT trains intrastate to as far afield as Broken Hill (once a week on Mondays outbound, returning Tuesdays), Casino (2x daily each way), Dubbo (daily), Tamworth/Armidale/Moree (daily, but coaches north of Narrabri to the latter) and Albury/Canberra, plus numerous connecting road coaches.

The problem though is in Sydney, Wollongong, Blue Mountains, the Lower and Upper Hunter Valleys and Newcastle, few are eligible to travel given lockdowns and the small number of permitted reasons to leave home.

REX is operating its small South Australian Adelaide - rural SA network normally but today that is only five flights.

Elsewhere such as in Queensland it has some regulated, government-subsidised routes that continue to bring in some, though not enough, funds.

With the additional cancellation of all mainline Boeing B737-800 REX flights (routes such as Melbourne to Adelaide, Gold Coast and SYD), most of the REX fleet is laying idle today.

How this company's shares are 'worth' A$1.20 a pop is beyond me. Further lockdowns will continue, and health bureacrats with their inability to assess economic and social costs are calling the shots, with our politicians having abrogated responsibility.

For a small ASX-listed entity it will be racking up daily losses, at a minimum, in the high tens of thousands - probably an underestimate as to how bad things are. It may not have the corporate overheads of QAN but REX still has to lease and maintain aircraft, pay maintenance staff as aircraft can't be left to rot on tarmacs, presumably pay airports for storing aircraft and meet its head office overheads.
