It's called "chemistry", a process chemical engineer can exploit high sulfate levels to remove other unwanted compounds and elements using less reagents. Less reagents = lower process cost. The exact method for doing this is the secret herbs and spices.
Of course you wouldn't claim that your Lithium was high purity BG if it contained high sulfate levels (or high any impurity levels).
