The US ORNL and PORTS stockpiles
Lynn Kszos and Arthur Stewart at the environmental sciences division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee have described the sale of a massive declassified military lithium stockpile in the context of a groundwater contamination issue the authors were asked to investigate. The study was the ‘end of project’ so no further formal follow up was performed.
The stockpile had been placed on the open market by the Department of Energy (DOE) for a competitive bid sale.
The sale of the stockpile surplus was jointly approved by DOE, the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Department of Commerce (DOC), who said that it was “designed to buffer the potential impacts of introducing approximately a four years' supply of lithium hydroxide into the market place”.
