Hey Prolific, the general idea is the owners of clever algorithm software run their server in a data centre physically very close to where all ASX trades are processed. This cuts the comms delay to a bare minimum which in turn allows the software to complete trades faster than everyone else. The software watches slower trade orders come through, a.k.a retail traders and gets in before it settles. If an order is placed for a large buy, the share price should go up. The algorithm is sensitive to this and will soak up some of that sp increase before the large buy is even done...
