I'm not a geek, but I did write an operating system for my HP150 to take the place of ms dos and to integrate into dBase2 - (about 20 computer generations ago) I also loaded and used Linux (10 gen ago) and got thoroughly pissed off with all the reading and fuss.
This is what I did for the new Intel Z170 box I built two months ago.
l loaded the best Win 7 I could get (I did Ultimate) updated it to Service Pack 1. Loaded Office (best you can get) Activate both. Disable windows update completely and for ever. Use Firefox (or other browser - not IE)
Don't like office? - then use an open source, but I use it lightly and have no probs.
Trouble with services - visit Black Viper. That will keep you busy a while.
Works fine - except for one fn glitch - I loaded off Rufus (don't ask, google it - its free) because of an issue with Z170 chipset and USB and loaded the win 32 bit version by mistake - now I have to do it all again to get 64. Damn. The issue here of course is that RAM access is curtailed - I have 16 gig and was planning to go to 32. On the other hand some of my old programs seem to like win 32 better !!!
