From what I could find on google it seems knocking the top of a hill is standard practice when it's necessary! They seem to do it a bit with coal mining in the US. They sometimes put the leftover rock in a nearby valley and fill it up or re build a mound and soil, grass, tree it at the landowners request! Still a lot of guess work on my part and it would be great to here from someone who has been involved in the process if they are out there! I would also guess the amount of the hill taken would depend on the amount of mineralization! Maybe they would continue down opening up a big pit?
