Quite the reverse , If going underground you want enough rock vertically above the underground workings to act as a bridge (a crown pillar) to stop the pit falling in on the workings .
Be better for the new lodes to be offset from the pit so not needing a crown pillar .
I am Not an engineer just what seems logical to me .
