In a wonderful book "economics in one lesson
on page 20 riots are described to have broken out when machines were introduced to Hosiery Manufacturers in 1876 fearing hundreds to be put out of work !!!!! so they the rioted ... the authorities many of the rioters were in fact from out of town... they were then given two choices either be hanged or be transported back to where you come from

send the children at bently back home, kick em out of the area!

PS were the hosiery workers worst fears realized ...NO in fact in 2 to 3 years after that time there were 30% more people employed in the industry !!!!!!!!!!!
