On 'nuance' I reflect on that as well and the way things are expressed. The words used can mislead you by what you associate them with or assume goes with them.
In this book Competing for Stock Market ProfitsPaul F. Jessup he showed how most marketed methods of finding investment success barely work if at all So basically most people in investment products are paying for investment management that has no special ability at all. Quite sobering.
However, in a short page or two some methods are mentioned in passing but a conclusion not given. One of them was investing via options. I suggest to people that the reason conclusions were not given was that the preliminary answers ( this was back in 1975 ) surprised them; a lot!
Now the thing about options is not the immediate higher risk of expiring worthless that most people jump to, but the tiny value compared to the value of the stock. The ratio between the two can be extremely different. I may have mentioned ratios before.... So, it is not options per se that matter but the tiny value compared to the value of the company. It is the tiny value that enables outsized returns in the event of success. This is the nuance most miss when reading the book.
When a company's shares fall down to the value of an option you have an opportunity without the time risk of options. Conventional thinking dismisses most of these as too risky as the fear of losing 1x means they give up the chance of 10x ( so far for MSB but much more to come ) and fund managers get paid to make such decisions. They should get the boot in my view. Many here have gone against their views.
Trumps trade wars may see things escalate and create plenty of opportunities at option prices. Be ready but know plenty will fail. I have gone with MSB, TTT and FBR but said no to SGR on the 'option' price levels. I may live to regret the no decision.
MSB is still low assuming the success of current indications but what do I know.
ps Passion has got me into plenty of trouble.
