I guess one (possible) advantage is brokers and investment advisers.
Many don't provide advice or track any stock outside of the 500.
I confirmed this recently when I suggested to my wife (who's finances are separate from mine) that she look at AGY. She spoke to "her broker" who said "don't know, we don't look at or advise on anything outside the ASX500."
But, she bought AGY anyway.
