funds/instos - I was grouping any entity that is not insider (management and beneficiaries), or retailers, as funds/instos - but I agree with your elaborations.
greater institutional buying of a stock will inevitably lead to a greater pool of that stock being available for borrowing. It doesn't automatically lead to an increase in shorting activity. It just makes it easier for shorting entities to get in on the action if they see headwinds for the company (like A2M) or weakening fundamentals. (like KGN)
i lived through a long dark 18 month winter of GXY being shorted which reached a height of 20% of all SOI being held in short position. The major holding funds were buying and selling all the while taking a clip from short selling entities borrowing their stock.
