Thanks @Harmattom. My remaining concern is whether the shorters have already been accumulating large numbers of WBT shares at cheap prices and have held them in perhaps several names of possibly related entities. If so, they can now use these holdings to satisfy the lenders' calls for return of the borrowed shares and thus the buy back of shares on market could be minimised.
We will never know, of course, but it seems evident that the shorting activity that forced the share price down would enable such accumulation.
