The index funds do nothing to enhance the long term value of the company, except maybe a temporary price surge when they enter the fray.
My recollection when WBT joined the ASX 200 was some 5 to 6mill new shares purchased.
Then the index funds don"t give a rats and happy to make some extra money by lending stock to shorters
As say 5 mill shares of index funds leave the scene the shorters will no doubt negotiate a price to buy the index stocks and at the same time return the borrowed stock to them
Once this is done there will still be say 8 to 10 mill shorts still being around
Hopefully the switchover will be orderly at a price not too far away from current level
Dont believe they will give the impression of too much collusion, even though we know there has been plenty in the past.
The shorters will lock in some nice profits on a good slice of their shorts and WBT will be in a better place to consolidate their position, at least until we are back in the ASX 200 ie at much higher price levels
