Absolutely agree that logistically, rationally and environmentally that rail would be a better option than road. It is the states property and it costs them exactly zero $ to let it sit there and fall apart, they have already removed a lot of the level crossings and some of the substantial bridges and culverts aren't being inspected or repaired.
But we are talking about governments here, they love getting roads destroyed by numerous trucks because they can argue endlessly with the Federal government about who pays for what, fund infinite hi-viz jobs and votes all up and down the road and cut ribbons every few months, after all, these trucks won't be going through some leafy streets in Adelaide, they would be unloading at the back of Port Augusta and if you really want to see how SA state governments treats voters further than 40km from the Adelaide GPO try driving on a road or try to see a doctor out in the regions, and see how you go....
