I don't get why people are so against shorting. If you can buy before you sell, why not sell before you buy?
That way if you can express an opinion about a stock that you don't currently own. It's also a way of eliminating risk - for example on could go long in CBA and short in NAB or vice versa, that way it is possible to express an opinion about the relative merits of stocks while reducing the risk of big market moves.
Personally, I almost never go short on a stock, and have only done it a couple of times, but it has a place in the investing world, like all other instruments and strategies.
