Shorting does tend to be a good process of discovery for the worst case outcome. When stocks are shorted for no apparent reason like TWE then I simply take the view that its either a buying opportunity (which I have been doing here) or its reducing my risk in the stock and therefore allowing me to increase risk in other areas of my portfolio....I'm a long term investor so my response to stocks targeted by shorters usually works out very well. The only time it doesn't is when the company has been actively shorted prior to bids being lobbed as regulators are hopeless at identifying and/or prosecuting this form of acquisition price manipulation.
