Hi Roar. In the grand scheme if a supermarket is fitted out with smart shelves throughout, the staff will know. For example, if you pick up a can of baked beans from aisle 2 and you put on the coke shelf in aisle 7, the computer algorithm will pick this up, and they will know. So not only can management know how much stock they have - say 34 cans of baked beans - they will also know that 1 can is over in the coke section. they can also streamline the collection and return of misplaced items. And I suspect they will be able to ID "other" items - anything from a bag of prawns to a device. EWhatever doesn't already have a "profile" would be viewed as foreign and require immediate attention.
The potential for monitoring stock levels, real time usage, wastage limitation, fresh produce recognition, streamlining customer experience, dynamic pricing, all in an AI framework that refines itself day by day, and one that does not film or photograph customers and ignite civil rights concerns, is IMHO unbelievable.
