My knowledge is old but since 90% of normal non earthquake stuff is still built to old design basics and engineering catchall basics and some basics of earthquake stuff will always remain constant. The old days where mass and large foundations were seen as the best options are out of date and Japanese have known that for 100 years with their lighweight flexible constructions and flexibility in service connections on different soils. Shear keys / piles are smart as they keep slab in place up to a certain level of activity engineered so at a point when the above building is better off to be "floating:"so it doesn't collapse instantly increasing initial structural integrity. . The Kiwis are well up to date with this and even have services cut out at certain earthquake levels so there can't be major gas leaks and flooding from mains. Those Bro's have learnt a lot .
