I should correct an error on that last post: I stated that 2004 was one of California's rainiest years so far this century, in fact I meant 2005.
The confusion is due to the fact that the Californian 'water year' starts from October and ends in September of the next year, so when I wrote 2004 I was getting the water year confused with the calendar year.
The image below is an old chart from Hilltop Ranch that depicts the yield-per-acre for Californian almonds between 1982 and 2011.
You can see the dip in the per acre yield in those years which were rainiest during the February pollination (2005, 2009, 2010).
If you have a minute or two free, I think it is also worth reading the chart above in reference to the infographic below, taken from a local Californian news site earlier this year.
Three of California's wettest years (1983, '93 and '98) took place in the late twentieth century, and a quick glance at the per acre yields for these years on the Hilltop Ranch chart might add some weight to the argument that wet years are almost always a challenge for almond growers.
