There is a difference: the fungi would need to hire jackhammers to get through the shell of a macadamia; with soft- and paper-shell almonds, they just walk in through the open pores and splits.
My pecans (two trees)were unharmed this year, much like your macadamias, but the paper-shell almonds were a poor quality on the tree and an almost total loss once they had dropped.
