At first it looked like a logical move - you want the new COO Paul Harris taking care of everything that is operating like Tritton, Cracow and Mt Colin and trying to maybe get improvements and efficiencies into current operations.to maybe bring costs down, instead of depleting all their orebodies in a profitless exercise.

The new role of a CTO Cheif Technical Officer - Ian Sheppard's new position is all about the technical risks and geology/mettalurgy/development risks of bringing unprofitable things back into production (i.e. Jaguar) and new brownfields into production to feed existing mills (i.e. Constellation & Barbara) and other things that i have some doubts about but which certainly have execution risks (i.e. Stockman).

Seems like a logical division of roles so far right? The mining engineer (Harris) taking care of things operating and the Masters of Minerals Economics but also mine engineering background (Sheppard) looking after the technical expansion/future projects that have the execution risk.

But then you read this. and the COO (Harris) also has responsibility for Safety (fair enough) but also for exploration? Thats just weird. Exploration should be under the purview of the CTO and not the COO because its all the Jaguars and Stockmans that need more tonnes and/or better grade and the decision makers about these things is the CTO and not the COO.

The CTO role is also got lateral thinking in it, and I am thinking that maybe automation/ore sorting and such are examples of this, but is lateral thinking also corporate action i.e. acquisitions and other corporate joint ventures? If its corporate action or M&A who is he going to be talking to?
