Either way ..they must have /will take a "hair cut" . They are also very active in many stocks (ADN and Z1P just a few come to mind) While many say that shorting is over estimated..you have many big players in Industry and Corporate Super Funds also lending out script all the time....Begs the Q. if it's not such a big thing , then why do they engage in the practice.?
In this world of ever increasing "investor and social activism" maybe some should ask these folks why they participate (as custodians of other peoples stock) and exactly what % of annual revenue they generate . After all , if it's no big deal, why do it?
