All the different interpretations of the announcements draws attention to the compelling need to stop pouring money down the drain arguing and litigating at great expense when a relationship becomes dysfunctional.

My take on why they paid to settle claims against Soco was because Soco didn't have any money but they did have a bunch of assets that Vmt was very keen to own which they agreed after negotiation with the the court governing the collection of debts owed by Soco Shanghai were more valuable, even at liquidation prices, than the amount they were claiming in their legal action.
