The one-off stimulus is $1,200, but arguably of more value is the $600/week additional funds that unemployed Americans will receive, for the next four months, in addition to their state benefits, which are on average just under $400. This means that unemployed Americans could receive up to approx. $1,000 per week, which is in line with the median wage in the US. What makes this whole situation so challenging is that you get horrific job loss and unemployment figures out of the US, yet bizarrely many of those individuals, who at this point in time are largely from the hospitality, travel, retail sectors, will be receiving payments at least on par and in some cases greater than what they were earning in their previous roles. This will most definitely help take the edge of this mess - however the bigger question is what happens at the end of the four months? I.e. hopefully the US is well on the way to having this under control and the Govt. may extend the support by a couple of months to get them to a place where some businesses can begin to reopen and start hiring.
