Yes prawn farms have been around for years and so have diseases that have contaminated farm stock.
This program in selective breeding is to guarantee disease free broodstock that is constantly available to Sea farms.
If you have been following the story for a while you may have noticed a couple of items that upset the industry, first there was a industry shortage of prawn brood stock around Australia resulting in lower production and therefor profits down. Then there was the white spot which devastated many producers on the east coast requiring the destruction of their stocks and the draining and quarantining of the ponds for at least a full season, imagine this in a farm the size of PSD.
The secondary aspect is the growth/time/size ratio of the prawns which improves the profitability of the project.
