Any prudent miner will want to know as much as possible about an ore body before commencing production. They want to mine as efficiently as possible. They want to take all the ore but no barren ground. They do not want to leave stranded ore behind which they cannot reach because they have removed the access to it. Only the incompetent would race into production without a prior comprehensive drilling programme.
