Despite the best intentions of the Greenies, I think coal will play a vital part of energy generation for some time yet. Have a look at the Aurizon SP and tell me if that shows pessimism ! All this brow and chest beating...... its like saying that electric vehicles will take over conventional combustion or diesel engines, they may but it will be a long time (IMHO) before they do. I wonder if the greenies have wondered where the power comes from to make their small or electric cars, pushbikes or scooters ? Oil and energy ! Here's another thought with all these "polluting" cars putting out their dirty diesel fuel and exhausts at ground level...... I wonder if the Greenies on their gap year (when they fly to the Gold Coast or even overseas), have thought about the number of Jet aircraft pouring out their high octave avgas exhausts at super hot temperatures at 40000 feet for the 12-15 hours ? it would take from Oz to the UK ? Have a look at one of the free plane tracking sites and see the number of aircraft in the air in the world at any one time, doing just that. It IS amazing ! And to think the Indians are going to stop using coal and pollution over there ? It really is about profits IMHO and "much ado about nothing !"
