SHV plants 50% nonpareil variety as it is a premium variety, one of the best in terms of size, shape, colour and taste. They would plant more but as it is a non-pollinator they need to plant pollinator varieties. SHV's preferred pollinators are Price and Carmel varieties which they tend to make up the other 50% of the orchards, 30% and 20% although I forget which is 30% and which is 20%
At a guess I would presume the 20% variety is the better pollinator but not as great in taste, I find when eating raw almonds there is always the odd one which is more bitter so I'd presume this is the 20% variety.
I have read that Californian growers have tried growing self pollinator varieties (the holy grail of almonds) except to date they have not been able to get a self pollinator that can compare to non-pareil.
