Got a message from my contact source in one of the Philippine’s government departments about the unfortunate shooting ‘incident’ although it has not been reported in the media to date; below is a summary of the incident.
The victim’s family name is “Combate” and he was a resident of the village of Siana. The shooter’s family name is “Ajoc” and is a resident of Del Rosario a village nearby.
The source also told me; it turns out that some form of one-way Russian Roulette was being used by the shooter at the mine site. He pulled the trigger twice on his revolver whilst pointing the gun at Mr Combate thinking there were no bullets in the gun, with just the sound of the trigger making a ‘click’. The third time he pulled the trigger Mr Combate was shot in the stomach. It sounds like the ‘incident’ was part of a joke and not intentional but the ongoing investigations should get to the bottom of the story.
He was taken to Caraga Hospital that was described as “the worst hospital in Surigao City” whilst other private hospitals with emergency rooms were available.
A very unfortunate incident…. although I note that many other mining projects in the Philippines have had shooting deaths in the past…. Tampakan (many), Masbate (2 within the last month alone) and Didipio to name a few.
Very unfortunate. Very avoidable.
