Refer to the following article which gives a good summary of the Lumwana Mine developed by Equinox Minerals (which was taken over recently by Barrack Gold)

In particular, note the grades required to create the massive open cut Lumwana mine :-

1. Measured Reserves of 322Mt averaging at 0.73% copper (5.2 billion pounds of copper

2. Inferred Resources of 561Mt averaging at 0.63% copper (7.8 billion pounds of copper

3. Proven and probable reserves of 299Mt at 0.68% Cu (4.5 billion pounds of copper)


I would say that ARE is looking at emulating the EQN model!

And if an economical resource can be discovered, ARE will utilise the associated benefits of the precedent set by Equinox (eg newly developed infrastructure for power and transport,accessability to specialised services etc etc etc).
